Sony's new CEO discusses taking over.
February 3, 2012
Earlier this week, Kaz Hirai was named Sony's new president and CEO. In a new interview, Hirai has spoken out about what the transition means for him, and how he plans to change things at Sony.
"I thought turning around the PlayStation business was going to be the toughest challenge of my career, but I guess not," he told The Wall Street Journal. "It's one issue after another. I feel like 'Holy s***, now what?'"
Hirai plans to make changes to Sony's goals. Following a two billion dollar loss, he knows that Sony's business model will need to adapt in order for the company to survive.
"I think one of the fundamental things that we need to change at Sony is to become a company that provides a very unique and compelling user experience as opposed to just a company that provides great hardware products," he said. "We really need to buckle down and be realistic. I don't think everybody is on board, but I think people are coming around to the idea that if we don't turn this around, we could be sitting in some serious trouble."
Hirai also discussed how he plans to make Sony, a huge corporation, into a focused team that can accomplish his goals.
"Sony is a very large organization," he said, "Not only do we need to bring a team together within the core electronics business, it's about bringing a core team of senior management and making one team with the entire Sony group of companies, and I think I can bring a lot to making sure that we have that team that's pulling in one direction with one focus and with one objective."
Kaz Hirai will transition into his new position at Sony on April 1st. For the full interview, head to The Wall Street Journal.
